The Local Area around Glenridding, Patterdale and Ullswater

Fairlight Guesthouse is perfectly positioned in the centre of Glenridding next to Ullswater in Cumbria the Lake District. We are easily accessible from the M6 at Penrith, and Windermere, Keswick, and Ambleside are all within 30 minutes drive. See our location for more details. Our bed and breakfast is also just ½ mile from the beautiful village of Patterdale. Glenridding grew up around the old Greenside Lead Mine at the foot of Helvellyn and Fairlight B&B along with most of the village is built from the traditional lakeland stone that epitomises the area.

Pubs, Shops and Restaurants

Glenridding also has 2 local convenience stores, Catstycam, a great shop selling all kinds of outdoor equipment, several other cafes and restaurants. There is also a Tourist Information Centre in the Car Park very close to our bed and breakfast. Glenridding also has its own garage which has an excellent repair centre should the need arise.

Patterdale is just ½ mile down the road and has the excellent Patterdale Village Store and Post Office. Patterdale also has another hotel, the local school and a CofE Church.

Windermere, Keswick, Ambleside and Penrith are all about a 30 minutes drive away from our bed and breakfast in Glenridding.

Walking and Climbing

Our B&B by Ullswater is in Glenridding, which is at the foot of Helvellyn itself and the area has a wonderful selection of other fells with some beautiful walks including St Sunday Crag, Fairfield and Grisedale Tarn, and to the east Place Fell and up to Angle Tarn. There are also a great range of local walks, including to Lantys Tarn and around the edge of the Lake.

Ullswater

Ullswater is England’s second largest lake and undoubtedly the most beautiful. It offers a great range of activities, including sailing, rowing, canoeing and kayaking. It is also home to the famous Ullswater Steamers, which run regularly from Glenridding to Howtown and Pooley Bridge. Glenridding is also home to the Glenridding Sailing Centre, which offers boats and Kayaks for hire, as well as excellent friendly and professional sailing tuition.

Other Local Attractions and Things to Do

There are a number of National Trust properties and attractions nearby, including Aira Force waterfall to the north, and Townend Country House to the West near Windermere.

There is an activity centre at Rookin House Farm, which offers horse riding, archery, quad bikes and much more.

Glenridding, Patterdale and Ullswater in the Lake District are all popular wedding venues. Our bed and breakfast is literally 2 minutes walk from both the Inn on the Lake and the Glenridding Hotels, and is 4 minutes away by car (or 15 on foot) from Patterdale Church.
